This young project marks its first year. We reached important scientific milestones, we have a growing community, and we are paving the way to reach the big goal: the creation of biodegradable monodose packaging for food and cosmetics.
The goal of this team is simple: Create an alternative to the billions of tiny fossil-based sachets and packs that end up in nature every year with something better for the environment. A package that is biodegradable, safe, and scalable for industry, so the consumer does not have to choose between product quality and sustainability.
One year after, projects ambitions are becoming reality: science is moving forwards, results are promising.
The 15 partners (Figure 1) gathered after one year in Novara, Italy. The stage was set for sharing the project’s one-year milestones. The roadmap to have safe, sustainable, biodegradable and recyclable monodose packaging is gaining form.
Safety and Sustainability are going hand in hand, not going their separate ways. The preliminary Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) criteria for all four use cases have been defined and formally documented by partner ITENE, giving the consortium a rigorous, evidence-based framework against which every material developed in the project will be assessed.
Preliminary batches of the novel biodegradable biopolyester-based biomaterials (by Novamont), enriched with olive oil subproducts (MYROLION), and polysaccharide-based compounds (by OIMO) are already been fully tested at GAIKER, replicated digitally and market solutions are being scouted.
The first versions of the bioplastic sheets, made from plant-based sources, were already developed by OIMO and Novamont and sent to the Danish Technological Institute for biodegradability tests. And the results are promising.
The biodegradability tests are feeding the Artificial Inteligence model developed by NORCE research that will be the digital twin that will be modelling and predicting biodegradation of the new materials, both from this project and future materials.
PNO Innovation has already identified preliminary Key Exploitable Results and identified the commercial pathways for E-OilÉ’s packaging solutions.
