Glossary

The E-OilÉ Glossary provides clear and concise explanations of key scientific, technological, and sustainability-related terms used throughout the project.

A

Anaerobic Degradation

A biological process in which microorganisms break down organic materials in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas as a by-product.

AI – Artificial Intelligence

The simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems, enabling them to learn, reason, and make predictions.

Additive

A substance added in small quantities to a material to improve or modify its properties, such as flexibility, colour, stability, or biodegradability.

B

Biodegradable

A material capable of being broken down by natural biological processes, such as the action of microorganisms, into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.

Bio-based Material

A material derived wholly or partly from biological resources such as plants, algae, or microorganisms, instead of fossil sources.

Barrier Properties

The ability of a material to resist the passage of gases, moisture, oils, or aromas.

C

Coating

A thin layer of material applied to the surface of packaging to improve its functionality, such as barrier performance, appearance, or biodegradability.

Circular Economy

An economic model designed to minimise waste and make the most of resources by promoting reuse, recycling, and sustainable material flows.

Carbon Footprint

The total amount of greenhouse gases, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e), emitted directly or indirectly by a product, process, or organisation.
